What are J and L Cuts

Stuart Little

J cuts and L cuts are simple audio overlap techniques that can make your edits feel smoother, more professional, and more emotionally connected.

Instead of cutting audio and video at exactly the same moment, you allow the sound to lead into the next shot or continue after the current shot has ended. It is a small detail, but it can make a huge difference to the way a scene feels.

What Is a J Cut?

A J cut is when the audio from the next clip starts before the video appears.

This helps build anticipation, provide context, and create a smoother transition into the next shot.

  • Builds anticipation
  • Provides context
  • Creates a smoother transition

What Is an L Cut?

An L cut is when the audio from the current clip continues after the video has ended.

This keeps the scene feeling alive, smooths over cuts, and helps maintain emotional continuity.

  • Keeps the scene feeling alive
  • Smooths over cuts
  • Maintains emotional continuity

How to Create J Cuts and L Cuts in LumaFusion

  1. Unlink or separate audio if needed.
  2. Trim or extend the audio independently from the video.
  3. Nudge the audio left for a J cut, or right for an L cut.

Quick Visual Guide

For a J cut, extend the next clip’s audio earlier so the viewer hears the next scene before they see it.

For an L cut, extend the current clip’s audio later so the viewer continues hearing the scene after the picture has moved on.

Pro Tip

Use subtle overlaps of around 100–500ms for natural results. Longer overlaps can work well for dramatic or narrative effect, but they should always serve the rhythm of the scene.

Great edits aren’t just seen. They’re felt. Use J cuts and L cuts to make every cut count.
